Avalon Bakery & Cafe | Our Story

Baked with Purpose Since 1997

Baked with Purpose Since 1997

Avalon's story began in Detroit in 1997 with a simple belief: good food can bring people together. What started as a neighborhood bakery has grown and evolved over the years, but our appreciation for great food, genuine hospitality, and the community around us remains at the heart of what we do.
Where It All Began

Where It All Began

In June 1997, Avalon International Breads opened its doors on Willis Street in Detroit's Cass Corridor. With a hearthstone oven and a passion for baking, a neighborhood bakery was born. Those early days helped shape the Avalon name and the connection to Detroit that continues today.
Good Food. Good People

Good Food. Good People

From the beginning, Avalon has believed that a bakery can be about more than bread. It's about the people who make the food, the neighbors who enjoy it, and the connections created along the way. Today, we carry that spirit forward through thoughtfully prepared food, welcoming service, and a continued appreciation for our community.
Rooted in Detroit

Rooted in Detroit

Detroit has always been part of Avalon's identity. From our beginnings on Willis Street to our café on Woodward Avenue, we're proud to be part of a city known for its creativity, resilience, and strong sense of community. It's where our story began and where we continue to welcome neighbors and visitors alike.
A New Chapter, Same Avalon Spirit
